VOCS - VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
VOCs are organic chemical compounds that vaporize and enter the atmosphere. VOCs are often used in paint, carpet backing, plastics, and cosmetics.
VOC CHEMICAL EMISSIONS INCLUDE
Formaldehyde
Xylene/Tolune
Alcohols
Ammonia
The EPA's Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) study found levels of about a dozen common organic pollutants to be two to five times higher inside homes than outside. This pollution stems from VOCs emitted from an array of products found in our homes and offices.
Over the past 25 years, changes in our lifestyle and in the composition of construction materials and furnishings have led to a dramatic increase in VOCs. And as a result, terms like Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) and Building Related Illness (BRI) have become commonplace.
